On Wednesday 5th November Oxfordshire Freemasons held the yearly Charity Giving Evening at the Banbury Masonic centre where 14 of the 120 Charities that the Freemasons donated to in the past twelve months attended.

The majority of charities that the Freemasons donated to were local to Oxfordshire or National organizations that serve the communities of the towns and villages in Oxfordshire.

Four of the fifty five Masonic lodges in Oxfordshire were from the Banbury Centre of Masons, namely Calthorpe and Castle Lodges who donated over £3,000 to ‘Katherine House Hospice’, Rathcreedan Lodge who donated £600 to the ‘The Brodey Centre’ attached to The Horton Hospital, Calthorpe Lodge donated £200 to ‘The Banbury Young Homeless Persons Charity’ and Rathcreedan Lodge ‘The Maggie Harvey Trust’ for research into specific forms of brain cancer giving them £400.

After each presentation a grateful reply was made from a representative of each charity and many highlighted that they receive regular donations to their charity from Freemasons.

Banbury Charity evening 5 November 2014 018Other charities that the Masons supported on the evening were Thames Valley & Chiltern Air Ambulance – £5,500, SeeSaw – £1,100, Bardwell Youth Football Club (Ambrosden) £500, The League of Friends for Bicester Community Hospital £2,400, SSNAP £1,450, Clic Sargant £2,500, Flexicare £250, Special Effect £60, Helen & Douglas Hospice £5,200 and Witney Talking Newspaper £1,100.
In the past twelve months Freemasons have donated over £150,000 to charities and good causes in the Province of Oxfordshire. Three times a year they take groups of disabled children and adults and teach them to fish for a day, giving them a real treat at something different.

In December they are paying for over 400 disabled and disadvantaged children along with their parents, siblings and carers to enjoy a Pantomime at the Playhouse theatre in Oxford.
The evening highlighted the amazing work carried out by the fundraisers from each organization, a humbling experience for those who attended.

Rathcreedan Lodge has the reputation of having a very tempting raffle at the Ladies Festival.  This year the Master is holding the event during the summer on Saturday August 23rd at the Mercure Whateley Hall.

Reports that organising this year’s Ladies Ball raffle has aged Tim have been more than exaggerated..

This year’s raffle is be organised by Rathcreedan’s Assistant Secretary, Tim Moss;  “It is my privilege to organise this part of the Ball and to request donations for prizes of a varied nature sufficient to appeal to your lady.

It is not unusual for those brethren who are unable to attend the Ball to donate prizes in their absence and indeed some have pledged a sum of money in order to provide a spectacular hamper as a centrepiece. Whatever you decide to give will be presented as a prize on the night from the raffle.
 
You have all been very generous in the past and I trust that this year will be no different please. I know that the Master and his Wardens will join me in thanking you for your contributions and wish you a very happy evening with your lady and your guests.“

Happy Birthday Pantomime Project

The first weekly game of the Pantomime Project is now one year old and we have had 52 winners each receiving £25 and their Lodges also receiving £10 for each win.

The 2nd weekly draw started in January and the 3rd set started in April, meaning that now, every week we have 3 lucky winners and 3 Lodges also benefiting their own charity accounts.

Regarding the 4th set of numbers, half have been allocated but we do need to get brethren to sign up for the remaining numbers and then we will have 4 lucky winners a week. Therefore will you please ask your brethren to complete the attached form and send it to me so as we can start the 4th weekly game.

Our first Pantomime is booked for December in Henley and we have nearly allocated all the 230 seats to disabled/disadvantage children and their parents/siblings.
The children are coming from Helen House Children’s Hospice, Variety at Work, Wycombe Woman’s Aid, Woodeaton Manor School, Chiltern Centre for Disabled Children, Nomad Youth and Community, Mulberry School and Footsteps Foundation.

This is going to cost well over £3,000 but it will be worth every penny to give these children a special afternoon of enjoyment. Each child will also get an ice cream and a goody bag, one company is also going to donate a box of chocolates for each child.

Please support this worthwhile cause, it is only £1 a week and for your money you do have a weekly chance of winning £25. Your support will allow us to provide a pantomime for disabled/disadvantaged children every year at a theatre in Oxfordshire.

Daisy’s Dream supports children and their families affected by both life threatening illness and bereavement, throughout Berkshire and the surrounding areas.

The death or serious illness of a significant person in a child’s life can be devastating and difficult to understand. 

The serious illness or bereavement of someone close, can have a major impact on children’s home life, school life and friendships.  

Parents may need reassurance about their children’s behaviour, or advice about how they can best support them during such difficult times.   

Parents, carers and professionals can contact Daisy’s Dream for advice on ways to support children and young people. Our professionally qualified family workers can provide information and advice as well as direct support for children in their homes or schools.
 
We know that children can learn to cope with death when they are involved and given the appropriate opportunities to understand what has happened and to express their grief.

Whilst having no formal association with Freemasonry, some of members are also members of  The St George’s Day Club, which holds a celebratory lunch on England’s Patron Saint’s day each year at the Grosvenor Hotel in London, when a presentation is made to the clubs chosen ‘Englishman Of The Year’

This year’s award was presented to Bill Nankerville a British national champion mile runner who won the AAA mile title four times in five years between 1948 and 1952, his best recorded time was 4:08.8 set in 1949, Bill’s run of succees was interrupted in 1951 by another young man called Bannister.

Nankeville, Don Seaman, Roger Bannister and Chris Chataway set a world record time of 16 minutes 41 seconds for the 4×1 mile on 1 August 1953, as well as the world record 15:27.2 for the 4×1500 meters on the 23rd September 1953 running with Ralph Dunkley, David Law and Gordon Pirie.

Bill represented Great Britain in the 1948 and 1952 Olympic Games, finishing sixth with a time of 3:52.6 in the 1948 1500 meters final and in 1956  his book  ‘The Miracle of the Mile’ was published – his account of the  events leading to Roger Bannister’s historic sub-four-minute mile.
